I am trying to ascertain the weight of my 2003 Galaxy 1.9 tdi Ghia so I can check if my son in law needs to take a towing test to tow my Galaxy and caravan. I have found the vehicle ID plate but can not see what the numbers mean

V = 2510

B=4000

CD = 1240

F2 = 1280/1355

Which of these refers to the Gross weight and unladen weight?

Methinks

V = 2510 Gross Weight

B=4000 Max Train Weight

CD = 1240 Unladen Weight

F2 = 1280/1355 Front/rear max axle load

I dont know if it helps, but the 2005 Galaxy 1.9 PD TDI was rated (in the catelogue) as 2510 Kg Gross Vehicle Mass including driver at 75Kg and full fluid and duel levels, subject to manufacturing tolerances and options fitted.

Unladen weight is the empty weight of the car

Gross Weight is the maximum permitted weight of car including any load carried. i.e. max passengers and full boot etc

Max Train Weight is the maximum permitted combined weight of the car (inc load) and any trailer attached.

Max axle load is.....well I'll let you work that one out yourself.

Cat B

Motor vehicles with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg having not more than eight passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg. Combinations of towing vehicles in category B and a trailer, where the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3500kg and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle

MAM= 2510kg so you are ok if the gross weight (MAM) of the caravan is less than 990kg

Where do I find the plate with this information on my Mk2 Galaxy?

1240Kg seems low to me. While my handbook doesn't give an unladen weight it does give a kerb weight

The EC kerb weight is the mass of the vehicle ready for driving, i.e. inclusive of coolant, lubricants, fuel tank filled to 90%, tools, spare wheel and driver (75kg).

For my car, Mk2 2004 1.9TDi (130) Galaxy Ghia. the handbook gives a kerb weight of 1724 - 2003 kg. I used the lower of these figures when matching to the van I tow which has a MTPLM of 1410kg .. so 81.7% (It's generally recommended it be no greater than 85%)

Have I missed something?

Cheers,

What's the MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass) of your van John?

John,

There is a website what tow car .com it is a dutch site. You put in your car details and your caravan details and it checks to see if they are compatible and provides lots of detailed information such as power, torque, max speeds, hill starts, motorway driving etc for your combination. This site also gives you your vehicle weights and dimensions. All you need to do is find your car on the list provided.

It seems low because CD is the maximum front axle load.

Can't remember why it gives 2 values for rear axle......may come back to me though
